MANADO – Terus menyebarnya berita bahwa akun facebook akan ditutup pada 15 Maret oleh pemiliknya, menjadi pembicaraan banyak orang di dunia termasuk di Sulawesi Utara terlebih Sulut. Pasalnya, jejaring Facebook ini dinilai merupakan satu di antara jejaring sosial yang telah familiar di masyarakat.
”Harus diakui dengan adanya Facebook banyak manfaatnya, misalnya teman-teman sewaktu SMP dan SMA bisa saling berkomunikasi setelah lama putus hubungan. Keluarga, dan kerabat yang telah putus komunikasi bertahun-tahun bisa nyambung lagi. Pokoknya banyak deh manfaatnya, memang ada juga sih negatifnya, tapi di jaman gini facebook perlulah, ”ujar Clara Sangian, mahasiswi Universitas Manado (Unima) di Tondano, Senin (28/02).
Sedangkan Jerry Erungan, warga Minsel yang saat ini bekerja di Bogor, Jawa Barat, mengatakan, meski berada di perantauan dia merasa dekat, karena setiap hari bisa berkomunikasi dengan saudara, dan kerabat di Manado melalui jejarang Facebook. ”Kalau benar-benar ditutup, gimana yah. Terpaksa pindah ke jejaring sosial lain, cuma khan harus diakui Facebook lebih familiar, ”ujarnya.
Sementara itu, beberapa pengelola warung internet (warnet) juga mengaku khawatir dengan tutupnya facebook akan menurunkan minat warga untuk datang ke warnet. ”Masalahnya sebagian besar yang datang ke warnet hobby-nya klik facebook, jadi dengan ditutupnya facebook nanti bisa saja pengguna jasa warnet berkurang,” ujarnya. Internet faux news site Weekly World News posted an outrageous story that Facebook will be shut down on March 15th 2011, due to the stress it has put Founder Mark Zuckerberg through.
Normally this type of news would not even be worth our time and effort, but an unfortunate situation occurred where thousands of viewers actually believed the story and shared it on Facebook. Over the past hour, 40 of my 320+ friends shared this story, and I’ve received a couple messages and emails about it from “worried” fans. I expect that the situation will get worse, sparking more controversy over the Internet.
So just to confirm, this is a fake story by a faux news site, similar to that of The Onion and Chive. As a reminder, always fact check before passing on stories, or else what happened today will keep happening over and over (like this trend will ever stop anyway)… oh yea, use some common sense. Also, with a company estimated at being worth over $50 billion, why would anyone even think of suddenly shutting it down. As a friend said, it would obviously make sense to sell it off rather than just kill it all together.
